10 Best Alternative Albums Of The 1990's
4. Blood Sugar Sex Magik - Red Hot Chili Peppers
After almost a decade under their belt, The Red Hot Chili Peppers were still going strong as the 90's got rolling. That didn't come without its fair share of hardships though. Founding Pepper Hillel Slovak had tragically died of a drug overdose and Anthony Kiedis was dealing with his own narcotic habits.
Once the band acquired masterful guitarist John Frusciante, the band started to really find their groove. On Blood Sugar Sex Magik, the band had finally refined their sound with the help of producer Rick Rubin, who took the band from campy funk kings of California to global rock gods.
It also didn't hurt that the band were writing some of their most eclectic material to date, from the funk romps of "Give it Away" and "Suck My Kiss" to balladesque material like "Under the Bridge," where Kiedis opens up about his old life as a drug fiend. While Frusciante's licks are absolute ear-candy, the star of the show is Flea as he annihilates his bass with rapid funk runs.
When the Chili Peppers could have been known as a gimmicky band, this album proved that there was a plethora of musical talent underneath all of the punk intensity.
