10 Best Breakup Albums Of All Time
9. Sea Change - Beck
When talking about the greatest heartbroken songwriters in the world, Beck's name doesn't really get brought up all that often. Hell, even when looking at his amazing output in the '90s on Odelay and Mellow Gold, it wasn't clear as to what the hell Beck even was to begin with. Although stuff like Midnite Vultures showed him getting even more weird, Sea Change is our favorite post modern hipster heartbroken and a shell of what he once was.
That's not to say that this record is bad though, with most of the songs being a slow change into the worlds of mellower music like country and even dreamy soundscapes in places. Clearly the soundtrack contribution he made to Eternal Sunshine has rubbed off on this record, as Beck takes a back seat and lets his music do the talking for a lot of these tracks.
Though the lyrics might be a little basic in places, that seems to be the whole point behind the project. The only reason why there are lyrics at all is to frame it within the context of his broken heart, only acting as sketches to show the real heartache going on in the music. While other records might just allude to different tales of heartache, Beck took his entire shattered heart and laid it bare across this hour of music.
