10 Best Breakup Albums Of All Time
8. Here, My Dear - Marvin Gaye
Any breakup album that you find out in the wild is going to have a bit of saltiness with it to some extent. There's nothing inherently wrong with that either, seeing how a lot of these raw wounds are coming from a genuine place of loss or betrayal. Or in the case of Marvin Gaye, from a strictly business standpoint.
As Gaye was coming off of his prime albums like What's Going On, he ended up severing ties with his wife of some years. While it's not anybody's business to read into his personal life, it did end up coming back around when his ex was the daughter of Berry Gordy, the founder of Motown Records and the man behind Gaye's career. In the divorce proceedings, Gaye was essentially commissioned to write an album, with the royalties all being paid to his ex wife's estate.
The result was Here, My Dear, which is still one of the saltiest albums ever created, as you can hear Gaye's sarcastic tone through his singing. From song titles like You Can Leave, But It's Going To Cost You, you can tell he isn't holding anything back, which is both cruel and funny at the exact same time. Though it's no one's business to air their dirty laundry, rarely have we had results that were this entertaining.
