10 Best Canadian Rock Bands Of All Time

4. Sloan

Sloan are true national heroes. While they’ve picked up significant adulation on indie scenes around the world, they’ve always flown a little under the radar. In Canada, meanwhile, they receive the veneration, and awards recognition, they deserve, and are true unit shifters. They’re one of the nation’s best kept secrets, and the Canadians seem to like it that way.

A true collective, Sloan boast an unchanged line up, all of whom chip in with songs and vocals, much like The Beatles, a major inspiration for the quartet. They play unabashed power pop, but with the songwriting chops to find great variation in the often limiting genre. They can break hearts on the likes of “Coax Me”, rock out on “Money City Maniacs”, and throw back to ‘60s pop on “Penpals”.

So acclaimed are Sloan in their native land that their album Twice Removed was voted the finest Canadian album of all time in 1996, beating Joni Mitchell to the top spot. Even Sloan themselves would likely suggest that’s a bit much, but for fans of ‘60s sounds or generally great songcraft, it’s a must-have.
