10 Best Cover Songs That Completely Ignored Their Original Genre

1. Johnny Cash - Hurt

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3aF9AJm0RFc Originally By: Nine Inch Nails Considered to be one of the finest covers of all-time, Trent Reznor himself said that after Cash covered it, the song was no longer his, and it's easy to see why. NIN's unique brand of alternative and experimental rock has given the world of music some true gems over the years and Hurt is a terrific tune. But Cash, through barely changing any of the lyrics, somehow managed to change it from a song about being upset because of a girl, into a retrospective ballad of regret over his life. With the original being a collation of obscure electronic sounds and Reznor's rapid shifts in volume and pitch, it's actually a real surprise that Cash chose to cover this, but alas, he did. Cash's version consists of his country acoustic guitar playing and the beauty of his baritone voice. Capable of bringing a tear to many an eye, The Man in Black reinvented a song and claimed it in the process. What are some of your favourite covers that redefined their original's genre?
