7. Manic Street Preachers - Umbrella
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=C5Of_F0-hOw Originally By: Rihanna Umbrella, one of the biggest singles in the history of popular music and the song that put Rihanna on the map. It's been covered numerous times by various artists but to see a band that were around before Rihanna was even born do their own little version is something of note indeed. Not a hugely well-known song in their catalogue, it's a very strong retake of the tune as the band opted for traditional instruments and vocals in their cover. With Jay-Z's rap verse omitted (that would probably be going too far for the Preachers), they maintained the energy of the original but with a personal touch from the band. It may not necessarily be as good as the original, let's remember, it was written as a pop song and its intended quality wasn't for British alternative-rock but to reach a wider audience and Rihanna totally nailed it. I doubt many people have heard this outside of the band's fan base and it makes for an interesting listen.
