10 Best Cover Songs That Completely Ignored Their Original Genre

6. Dead Kennedys - Viva Las Vegas

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XT72CgEJQNQ Originally By: Elvis Presley The final song of their most acclaimed studio effort, Fresh Fruit For Rotting Vegetables, Dead Kennedys went full throttle with a pure, straight punk approach to a classic Elvis record. Swapping out the charm and charisma associated with The King for a manic and juvenile approach, this was the band's way of sticking it to the man and the music industry, proving that even Elvis himself wasn't able to escape the cross hairs of the hardcore punk movement. Half-homage, half-parody, certain lyrics within the song are altered to make references to hard drug use whilst on a Vegas outing, which is actually quite a welcome change. The original glamourises the vision of living it up in Sin City, whereas with a few tweaks here and there, Dead Kennedys were able to morph it into a scathing and gritty representation of what high rollers are actually like behind the glitz and glamor. Some may be offended by the band's whacky antics, but this cover is what punk is all about.
