6 . Cat Power - "He War"
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TZVqNnqEDO8 Wait, that's Dave Grohl? Released in 2003, this track from American singer/songwriter Cat Power shows a different side to his drumming. So different that, at first, it's hard to tell that it's Grohl playing it. But once the song kicks and the thumping beat of the toms to snare comes in, it is undeniably Grohl. Probably the most 'subtle' entry on the list, it shows an understated brilliance to his drumming. The shuffle intro builds a tension much like the rest of the instruments, from the almost grungy rhythm guitar to Cat Power's own haunting vocals. It's a song you expect to kick in at 'any moment now', but it never quite does. But it's this ability to hold back that makes it so much more powerful. Grohl's drums are wonderfully produced and make the track all the more brilliant. Fred Armisen, former Saturday Night Live cast member, chose this as his favourite Dave Grohl drum performance. When you listen to it, it's easy to see why.
