10 Best Debut Rock Albums Of The 1990s
1. Rage Against The Machine - Rage Against The Machine
In terms of creating a sound, an atmosphere, and a statement that nobody had ever heard before, top prize has to go to the self-titled debut album of Rage Against the Machine.
The California band burst onto the scene with the force of a jet-propelled bulldozer, ripping everyone's ears off with their hard-hitting metal sound and then yelling about how much they hated the government directly into their brains.
Every single member stood out as being on top of their game.
Zach De La Rocha delivered lyrics with the vitriolic violence of an underground slam poet; Tom Morello did things with a guitar that nobody had ever done before; Tim Commerford produced some of the best rock basslines in years; and Brad Wilk tied it all together beautifully with his excellent drum work.
It's one thing to make an angry record, but to create one that was also rhythmically sound with actual, bona fide hits on it was nothing short of a miracle.
Rage Against the Machine's debut album was so good that, honestly, they've struggled to ever surpass it.
That's meant to be a compliment, honestly.
