10 Best Double Albums In Rock Music History

3. Electric Ladyland - The Jimi Hendrix Experience

In the space of 1966 to 1969, The Jimi Hendrix Experience formed, released three albums, got mega-famous, and then broke up.

Just reading that sentence is enough to give a person whiplash.

If you feel sad that there's only a trio of Hendrix albums to dive into, then fear not! Because one of them is two for the price of one.

The band - which consisted of Hendrix on guitar and vocals, Noel Redding on bass, and Mitch Mitchell on drums - put out their third and final collection of songs as a double album in 1969.

The first side is just four songs long; the opening And the Gods Made Love, the slow crawl of Have You Ever Been (To Electric Ladyland), the thumping Crosstown Traffic, and then the utterly bonkers, near-15 minute long Voodoo Chile.

Throw in their cover of Bob Dylan's All Along the Watchtower, Gypsy Eyes, and Voodoo Chile (Slight Return), and you've got a recipe for a great time.

On paper, this album's pacing and structure is all over the place. But would you really expect anything else from a man like Hendrix?
