If anyone out there has a case to refute that Stan is both Eminem's penultimate song (no pun intended) and his most beautifully crafted, structured and shot video, then you better have a strong counter argument at the ready!
Stan, in essence, is a story that feels more and more cinematic the more it plays out, with its protagonist (or arguably antagonist) becoming more captivating and developed as his condition worsens.
The titular Stan deteriorates over the span of nine minutes and the video perfectly encapsulates the emotions expressed in the song itself.
On the surface, his circumstances seem pretty normal. Sure, his house could use a bit of a do-over, but his pregnant girlfriend - played by Dido - clearly cares about him and shows her love throughout. The only problem is that Stan loves Eminem a lot more.
Shown through a combination of fictitious archive footage and his home dynamic, we see Stan's obsession intensify until it reaches breaking point. Ultimately culminating in a sickening, yet perfectly sombre ending, as by the time Eminem responds to his letters, he realises that Stan had already killed himself, his girlfriend and unborn baby.
