10 Best Experimental Rock Songs Of All Time

8. Yves Tumor - Lifetime

One of the most intriguing musicians working at present, Yves Tumor is four albums deep into a career that whips like few others between truly experimental sound collages and lush, uplifting rockers. Their third record, Safe In The Hands Of Love, was a breakthrough of sorts, catching huge critical attention with its mixture of beautifully crafted melodies and strange, spooky, and blown out soundscapes.

The highlight is “Lifetime”. Yves Tumor’s powerful voice busts out a melodic line that could fit in as a hook on a modern moody R&B track, but instead of a lush surrounding it’s backed, and often overwhelmed, by competing drum patterns, a spooky piano line, and eventually a horn section that brings the ceremony to a dramatic close.

The song is simply overflowing with ideas - there are backing vocals that exist only for a few lines, momentary guitar riffs, and a clash of mournful vocals and dramatic, even anthemic musicality. There are few artists who can fuse the familiar and the weird like Yves Tumor can, an artist who’s hard to pin down but impossible to ignore.
