10 Best Female Drummers Of All Time
8. Meytal Cohen
Born in Ramat Gan, Israel, Meytal Cohen began her life-long love
of the performing arts by studying dance before picking up a pair of drumsticks
at the age of 18. At 21, she moved to Los Angeles where she graduated from The Los
Angles Music Academy before kickstarting her musical career as the
percussionist in rock band Metaphor, which also included cellist sensation Tina
Guo.
It was until 2010 when Cohen began gaining recognition by creating her own YouTube channel where she’d perform various drum covers of rock and metal tracks, ranging from Slipknot, Limp Bizkit, Tool, and Avenged Sevenfold – all of which she learned by ear. Racking up 1.5 million subscribers at the time of writing, Cohen was also reported to be the most followed Israeli woman on Facebook in 2013.
That same year, she raised over $144,000 on Kickstarter to fund her own original songs. Two years later, that came to fruition with the release of her band’s (Maeytal) debut album Alchemy.
Meytal’s incredible diversity and bombastic style fills her music with intoxicatingly punchy rhythms, arguably making her one of the most talented metal drummers working today – and it’s likely you’ve never heard of her.
