10 Best Female Drummers Of All Time

7. Karen Carpenter

Although this sibling duo may be best remembered for their wholesome melodies, one thing many people often forget is that Karen Carpenter was an insanely talented percussionist as well as an accomplished vocalist.

Learning to play the drums during high school while her older brother Richard took up the piano, the siblings performed together for years before they signed as The Carpenters with A&M Records in 1969 where they rose to stardom in the 70s.

Though Karen’s position in the band would gradually gravitate to frontwoman, she nevertheless continued to play drums on live shows and a selection of album tracks, with her abilities being recognised by the likes of Buddy Rich and Modern Drummer Magazine. She was even voted best rock drummer of the year in 1975, beating Led Zeppelin’s John Bonham.

Watching her play, it’s easy to see why. Carpenter brings such vivacity and energy to her performances insofar as we have as much fun watching her as she does playing. Combining the virtuosity of jazz drumming with the wild energy of Keith Moon, Karen Carpenter is easily deserving of a place on this list.

The tragedy was losing her at the young age of 32.
