10 Best Female Drummers Of All Time

2. Sarah Thawer

A Canadian drummer who works as a freelancer and educator, Sarah Thawer can turn her hand to a whole spectrum of styles including hip-hop, fusion, jazz, Latin, gospel, and Indian music.

Teaching herself how to play at a young age, Indian music has always played a huge influence in Thawer’s creativity. She’s spoken of combining various percussion instruments together and experimenting to create her own unique and unconventional sounds when she started playing, and it just takes a few seconds of listening to any of her live performances – many of which are posted on her Instagram - or engaging online lessons to hear just how distinctive her style is from other drummers.

Blending Indian rhythms and instrumentation into western grooves makes for fascinating listening, but it’s Thawer’s lively and funky playing where the real joy of her music lies.

After graduating from New York University, Thawer’s career has saw her share the stage and collaborate with dozens of other outstanding artists (including Senri Kawaguchi) in addition to creating her own original compositions that showcase her talents and sound.

A specialist in so many styles, it’s no surprise that Thawer is one of the top contemporary drummers.
