7. Icky Thump - The White Stripes
The White Stripes were mainstays of the garage rock revolution once the mid-2000's rolled around. Their brand of caustic rock ignited an entire movement of underground indie bands that would begin a revival of this primal rock sound.
Across Icky Thump, the band stays true to their initial blues rock sound while pushing the boundaries of the garage rock scene, such as using keyboards on the title track and "Conquest." Jack White's experimentation with effects also made for moments that took these songs to 11. Right beside him, Meg White pounds away on the skins, performing the trashy drumming style that gave the band its attitude. With all her detractors over the years, Meg's drums are the perfect foil to Jack's maniacal guitar soloing, even if she's not exactly Neil Peart behind the kit.
When the time came to record a follow-up, 4 years went by before the band announced that they would be going in different directions. Jack White has since spent his solo career employing more of the experimentation he had started on Icky Thump. While it would be interesting to see what directions the band could have gone with their new soundscapes, it's respectable for them to leave their studio legacy untouched with this sonic extravaganza.
