10 Best Final Albums In Rock

2. Blackstar - David Bowie

By the beginning of 2016, David Bowie knew that his time was short. After being diagnosed with liver cancer 18 months prior, Bowie decided to immerse himself in his music and use the time he had left to deliver an artistic sendoff for his career.

The resulting album Blackstar is an intense look at the Starman as he nears his final hours with us. Across songs like "Lazarus" and the title track, Bowie is looking death right in the face as he awaits his fateful departure. However, Bowie's attitude towards his demise is not defeatist, but rather determined as he prepares to cling to life with everything he has.

While there have been many fine albums by bands which inadvertently became spectacular final albums, Blackstar is one of the rare instances where an artist is able to say a definitive goodbye to his/her audience. Even though the album has sad connotations, the music that lay within is some of the greatest ever made in the 2010's. Hopefully we may see the Starman again as we travel through the different plains of existence, but for now this album will be a fantastic vicarious lifeline for everyone who was touched by Bowie's music.
