4. Vulgar Display of Power - Pantera
The Abbot Brothers had certainly come a long way with Pantera by the start of the 90's. After starting as a conventional glam metal outfit, the band got much heavier throughout the decade until their groove metal juggernaut Cowboys From Hell. With the band now firing on all cylinders, where did they decide to go next? Even heavier.
Instead of just staying in the shadow of Cowboys, Vulgar Display of Power showed the band going in a much more brutal direction while still staying rooted in the meanest grooves any metal band had ever taken on. Any track on this record from "Mouth For War" to "Walk" has a riff that immediately demands headbanging out of you. While Dimebag Darrell takes charge at many points on the record, the gruff baritone of Phil Anselmo absolutely assaults your senses as he mixes screams with some of the most forceful lyrics ever. Every line feels like Phil is going to come through the speakers at any moment and beat the living s**t out of you.
The experiment proved so successful that the band would continue to outdo themselves on later records like Far Beyond Driven. At a time when true metal was waning, Pantera ruled the 90's with one of the most crushing releases any band would ever release.
