10 Best Frontmen In Alternative Rock
1. Kurt Cobain - Nirvana
Was there anyone who embodied the archetype of the tortured artist, more than Kurt Cobain? His sensitivity to the world around him was what helped him write such visceral lyrics; and his frustrations at the culture he lived in, was what gave his music such raw, intensive energy.
Kurt Cobain was a rarity when it comes to great frontmen. The showboating, and arrogant grandstanding that goes hand in hand with being a star, didn't touch him in the same way. He knew how to play up to a crowd, and had no trouble filling the boots of a rock star in terms of music, but when it came to his interactions with the press it was far more strained. The notion of celebrity offended him. He rejected his status as an icon, and if anything, he seemed embarrassed by it. But this rejection of celebrity culture was what made him the legend he become. He embodied the sentiments he conveyed with his music; the rejection of the establishment was forever at the forefront of Cobain's character.
Barely half a year before Cobain's death, Nirvana performed an acoustic set for MTV. It displayed Cobain's ability as a hauntingly captivating musicians, regardless of if he had blaring amplifiers at his back, and a half destroyed Stratocaster in his hand. Almost thirty years on, we haven't had another like him.
