8. Jack White - The White Stripes
Towards the end of the '90s the rock scene was again looking in new directions. The old grunge groups were morphing into a post-grunge sound, or disbanding. The pop punk and nu metal movements were gaining traction, getting ready to dominate the 2000s; and British indie rockers were figuring out how to recycle the ideas popularised during the Britpop era. In Detroit, an enthusiastic duo was stripping things down to basics, creating a wall of energised sound with just a guitar, some drums and wild vocals.
The White Stripes pioneered the garage rock revival, that broke onto the 2000s music scene. They spearheaded the movement, paving the way for the likes of Kings of Leon, the Black Keys and the Strokes, but non of these other groups came close to matching the White Stripes' captivating allure.
Jack White was a tour de force. He sang as erratically as he played guitar. Impassioned, raw and without care for convention, his early musicianship led to the creation of a sound that was quintessentially his own.
