8. Acid Baby Jesus - Acid Baby Jesus (2011)
The economic downfall of Greece has certainly spawned in itself a new breed of angry punk. Greek garage rockers Acid Baby Jesus are like a rare and deranged hybrid of The Black Lips and Brian Jonestown Massacre which believe me, sounds seriously cool already. A la BJM, they melt the colourful psychedelic drippings of the 90s mod-psych era into a palette of their own creation. And in lieu of The Black Lips, their thrashy and heavy riffs tug at the spirit of rebellion. The bottom-heavy noise of 'Tomboy' sounds like The Dirtbombs covering 'Cosmic Cars,' all deranged and slightly erotic with gutter bass and sultry rhythmic sludge. One of my favourites on the album, the dreamy ballad 'Mesmerized' captures the essence of the Mediterranean, the reveries of a first love and does so in an artful way, making it a song that's easy to get lost in. 'Homosapiens' and 'Horse' are two decayed features on the album but each program appeal with TV signal feedback and trip-induced mania. The LP sounds scummy but so mercilessly adds a velvet touch of psychedelics to the compound and is done so in quite a clever way to keep up with the current fad of both genres. Definitely worth a listen.
