10 Best Genre-Blending Rock Albums Of The 2010s

8. 2 - Mac DeMarco (2012)

Mac DeMarco can be held accountable for the influx of indie bands trying to emulate his unique brand of reverb infused, slacker-rock during the last decade. But, Mac DeMarco is undoubtedly the king of this sound.

His second album was composed of laid back melodies, easy going drum beats and softly sung lyrics, encompassing a range of themes, from small town suburbia, to relationships and family dynamics.

The opening track Cooking Up Something Good, sounded like a reinterpretation of Bob Dylan's Subterranean Homesick Blues if someone had slowed it down, cut out 90% of the words and added a load of reverb. But, that's not a criticism, this album was refreshing in the way it turned everything down (except the reverb).

DeMarco injects all of his music with a degree of humour, with his live shows feeling like a long lost member of the Jackass crew doing a bit of guitar on the side.

His humorous approach to song writing was personified with track five on the album. Ode to Viceroy, was essentially a love ballad about his favourite brand of cigarettes.

Cigarettes really could be the perfect metaphor for a bad relationship you just cant let go off...
