10 Best Genre-Blending Rock Albums Of The 2010s
6. Miami Memory - Alex Cameron (2019)
Alex Cameron is an odd character, Imagine Nick Cave crossed with Jim Carrey. His ability to embody characters on the fringe of society through his music is spectacular, and his early songs were often character portraits of sleazy and deplorable individuals, set to synth pop melodies, with a good helping heartland rock thrown in.
The third album was a slight departure from this in terms of lyrical content, however. He's always had an aptitude for singing about fairly serious matters, while injecting a degree of wit and irony. And, he maintained this on the album Miami Memory, but the themes swayed more towards his current relationships, rather than fictional characters.
The title track Miami Memory, for example, has been described as a love song, which in many ways it was, but Cameron has never shied away from singing about explicit content, and the song was pumped full of references to the overtly sexual nature of his relationship.
But, the standout track came in the form of Far From Born Again, a mixture of Bryan Ferry-style singing, set to some funky '80s pop-rock melodies, with even a tantalising smidge of saxophone throughout the chorus. Again, the lyrics are packed full of sexual references, as Cameron sings about empowering sex workers, with a number of pro-female sentiments.
It's worth checking out his whole back catalogue, though, as this guy has made some really interesting music.
