10 Best Grunge Bands Of All Time

9. Screaming Trees

Though the big umbrella of grunge suits the Seattle scene quite well, each band coming out never really sounded like each other. While there were certain trademarks like the yarling vocals and loud guitars, you weren't going to mistake Nirvana for Soundgarden on any day of the week.

With that in mind, the sound of Screaming Trees was of the more adventurous outings at the start of the decade. Rather than just doing straight-ahead rock, these guys draped their sound in a more psychedelic tapestry, which made for some amazing tunes. Though all of the band brought their A-game to the table, the glue that held everything together was the sound of Mark Lanegan's voice, which had just the right amount of gravel to bring songs like "Nearly Lost You" to the next level.

With the band nabbing a spot on the alternative rock Singles soundtrack, the band never was able to truly explode like a lot of their contemporaries would have. In recent years, Lanegan has used his vocal talents in Queens of the Stone Age, where his features like "Hanging Tree" and "Song for the Dead" have become some of the band's most beloved deep cuts. They may be far from the greatest grunge act, but certainly underrated all the same.
