10 Best Grunge Bands Of All Time

2. Nirvana

Most diehard grunge fans seem to look at the scene in separate lenses: the time before Nirvana and after Nirvana. When Kurt Cobain first formed this trio out of Aberdeen, they were far from being the first grunge band to turn Seattlites's heads. However, their rapid rise to the top of rock's throne turned the grunge scene from a niche genre to a full-blown musical movement.

In the beginning, the group had a much greater emphasis on crunchiness, with their first record Bleach being dominated by heavy riffs. Once the band offered up their major label debut Nevermind, it was like a musical epiphany went off in your head. With "Smells Like Teen Spirit" becoming an instant anthem, the time was right for Nirvana to go out and conquer.

Even with their backs against the wall, Cobain knuckled down and released the most gloriously blemished recording of the grunge era with In Utero. After calming things down with an unforgettable Unplugged performance, the band's meteoric rise ended in tragedy when Cobain was found dead in his home in the spring of 1994. Though we will only be able to hear Cobain's greatness through what he left us, fans around the world will never forget how Nirvana made them feel.
