10 Best Hard Rock Albums Of The 2000s

6. Origin Of Symmetry - Muse

While Muse had started to generate buzz in the late 90's, the band's similarities to Radiohead in their early years was a major stumbling block for potential fans. Though the band had a lot of promise, they needed to mix things up a bit on their next release in order to really wow their audience.

As such, Origin of Symmetry shows this modern power trio forging ahead into more prog territory while also bringing some of the heaviest riffs of the era. Muse are now known for more space-rock themes in their presentation, but this album shows the band's first major forays into that style like on the 7 minute "Citizen Erased" and the piano driven "Space Dementia." Though there is more coherence on this release, this album is by far their angriest, with tunes that are incredibly visceral from the bass stomp of "New Born" to the unfiltered vitriol laced throughout "Hyper Music." Even the band's cover of "Feeling Good" is filled with an ominous sonic scope that can only be described as "pure Muse."

Thanks to this one record, Muse were able to shake off any more Radiohead comparisons and start expanding their musical vision to unforeseen sonic realms.
