10 Best Hard Rock Albums Of The 2000s

2. In Your Honor - Foo Fighters

After an incredibly contentious recording process that nearly broke the band apart, Dave Grohl wanted to shake things up for the Foo Fighters's next release. When composing the music for In Your Honor, Grohl came up with an enormous batch of songs ranging from hard rock pit anthems to delicate acoustic compositions. Rather than use the softer material in a different context, Grohl slowly warmed up to the idea of a grander musical vision for the album.

What unfolded was the first double record that the band released, with one disc of the typical Foos sound and another of introspective slowburns. The album was enormously successful, garnering hits like "No Way Back" and the anthemic and often-memed "Best of You." With 20 tracks, the album never feels bloated as the Foos' take sonic left turns like on the gorgeous "On the Mend" and the shimmery 70's rock of "Resolve." The album also features some of Dave's most personal lyrics on the back end like a tribute to Kurt Cobain on "Friend of a Friend" and a song for his daughter on "Miracle."

By throwing all their ideas at the wall, the band broadened their sonic palette from typical mainstream rock to every corner of the rock landscape.
