10 Best Hard Rock Albums Of The 90s
2. Dirt - Alice In Chains
1249900The incomparable Alice In Chains were a grunge juggernaut of the 90's. After Nirvana had paved the way for Grunge with their success, bands started popping up all over the place to try their hand in Grunge as well. None were finer than Alice In Chains and never were they better than with 1992's Dirt.
The harmonising vocal talents of Layne Staley (the finest voice in Grunge bar none) and Jerry Cantrell, Cantrell's even more staggering guitar skills, Mike Starr's catchy bass hooks, Sean Kinney's genre crossing drum work...Dirt is an album displaying a band at their very best. There is no end to the great songs that litter it's all too short run time; Them Bones, Dam That River, Down In A Hole, Rooster, Angry Chair, Would? I could go on and on because there is no song that lets this album down. It is track after track of Grunge perfection.
Like most great Grunge singers, Layne was a sadly tortured soul and he channels all of that pain into this album. Dirt, from the moment it starts to the moment it finishes, feels like a personal journey that we've been allowed in on and it is a masterpiece we should gratefully accept in remembrance of Layne.
