4. Weight Of The Tide – All Told

If you like Mastodon’s Emperor of Sand album but wish it was a little more, y’know… heavy, then Weight of the Tide is the band for you!

Bringing the gritty sludge all the way from Nevada, if this band’s debut EP All Told could be described in one word, that word would be “RIFFS!” The sheer weight of such crushing guitar parts as those found on “Years Like Days” and single “The Architect” are probably strong enough to level buildings, down-tuned to Hell and back and delivered at a middling pace that’s just perfect for busting out the head-banging.

The guitars alone would be enough to get All Told on this list, but there’s far more here to love as well. The melodies and refrains are genuinely memorable, especially – once again – from “The Architect”, and there’s a constantly bluesy undertone to the entire affair, no doubt reflecting Weight of the Tide’s all-American roots. There are even hints of prog rock on the expansive closing suite “For All Tomorrows”, which clocks in at just below eight minutes, boasting an ever-building opening that results in a hugely cathartic pay-off.

With its eclecticism and unwavering excitement, All Told provides Weight of the Tide with a monumental first step that, if capitalised upon properly, could see them become the successors to bands like Mastodon and Baroness.
