7. The Decline Of Western Civilization III

Anvil! The Story of Anvil
Spheeris Films

This is the third part of Penelope Spheeris' examination into the subcultures of rock music. This film focuses on the 'gutter punks' of Los Angeles during the late-1990s. She interviews groups of teenage rockers who have adopted punk sensibilities to an extreme level, rejecting all ideas of the establishment, living outside the norms of society and often becoming homeless as a result.

Following the format of the previous two instalments, Spheeris doesn't use any narration to give context to her movie; instead, relying merely on the interviews of the young gutter punks she encounters, as well as several interviews with veteran rockers from the early days of the punk movement. Original member of Black Flag, Keith Morris, features alongside Flea, formally of Fear.

The film also explores the infighting between different punk factions, most notably between the Skin Heads Against Racial Prejudice (SHARPs) and white supremacist punks.

On the one hand, it's a bleak insight into the world of punk rock, but it also demonstrates the sense of community that many lonely and alienated youths found through their affinity with the scene.
