9. Kickstart My Heart - Motley Crüe
Kickstart My Heart is the one song by Motley Crüe that almost never saw the light of day. When writing for Dr. Feelgood, Nikki Sixx wrote the song more for himself, but was convinced by management and the rest of the band to turn it into a Crüe song. It ended up being one of the greatest hits of their career, but the real killing blow didn't actually come from Sixx himself.
After laying down his solo break on the song, Mick Mars was fooling around with some effects until he landed on the whammy bar dips that start off the track. Knowing how exciting it felt to hear it, Mars suggested that the band start the song that way, almost like a bit of audio anticipation before going into the meat of the song.
Given how the song is about going at fast speeds and getting your heart rate up, those guitar squeals are the perfect accompaniment, with each passing tone sounding like you're switching gears in a Ferrari before the riff finally sends you out on the open road. Kickstart My Heart might not have been the single that the band really wanted to do at the time, but with just the right amount of kickass added in, it became one of the last great songs of the hair metal movement.
