10 Best Hard Rock Intros

3. Smells Like Teen Spirit - Nirvana

Once the '90s broke, the sounds of the hard rock scene were getting so boring. Even though underground genres like thrash were hitting their stride, most of the public had to deal with the artificial glam bands who wouldn't know about good music if it hit them right in their spandex pants. People were in dire need of something new, and Kurt Cobain knew just how to do it.

Though Smells Like Teen Spirit was never poised to be that big of a hit, the initial sounds of the intro made crunchy power chords feel new and exciting again. The songwriting might be attributed to Cobain for the most part, but the real magic doesn't come from his guitars or his singing voice. While the power chords set you up for something good, the song doesn't really get its excitement until Dave Grohl comes in with one of the greatest drum fills in rock history.

From the minute you hear that drum sound come thundering in, all of the hair metal bands of yesteryear were suddenly null and void. However, things got even better when the song progressed, from Cobain's dirty voice to his takedown of celebrity culture in the lyrics. After years of being force-fed what was popular, Smells Like Teen Spirit was the song the rock world needed to thrive. Throw on your flannel... the revolution had begun.
