10 Best Hard Rock Music Videos Of The 80s

1. I Want To Break Free - Queen (1984)

While American rockers were swanning around music sets with beautiful women draped all over the furniture, British rockers were going for a different vibe entirely. Freddie and the guys from Queen dressed in drag, will never cease to be iconic. It was a move that might have added to the overall legacy of the band, but it hurt the groups popularity in America.

Brian May and Roger Taylor have both stated that upon screening the video, American audiences couldn't take the connotations of men dressed like women, resulting in a limited airplay on MTV and a poor reception to the single.

Apparently, Twisted Sister adorning themselves in make-up was fine as long as they were singing about scoring babes, but when Queen went full drag, the sensitive masculinity of the MTV execs couldn't take it. Of course, as the decade went on, you'd get American glam rockers increasingly adopting women's clothing, guy liner and struts that any catwalk co-ordinator would be proud of.
