10 Best Hard Rock Music Videos Of The 90s
1. Smells Like Teen Spirit - Nirvana (1991)
Before Smells Like Teen Spirit Nirvana and grunge were very much apart of the underground. Afterwards you couldn't turn your head without seeing a flannel shirt or a pair of ripped Levis.
It was a turning point in the bands career, it hurtled them to international success and Kurt Cobain was forced into the media spotlight. Grunge was the official ruling genre in rock. Teenage angst was in and backwards teased hair was out. Almost overnight there was a shift in the musical zeitgeist and this video had a huge part to play.
Ever eager to stay away from anything with the faintest whiff of corporate authority, the band hired a fairly unknown director. They wanted something that was punk, something raw, something wild. After becoming enthralled by a movie in which a bunch of kids take over a school, Cobain was inspired to capture a sense of teenage anarchy.
The band was filmed paying a show in a school gymnasium, they pulled in a bunch of kids who had been attending a concert and ask them to pretend to go wild. But as the footage shows the kids only took the direction in part, neglecting to adhere to the 'pretend' aspect of it. They trashed the place. It resulted in a video that perfectly captured the essence of the song.
