10 Best Hard Rock Music Videos Of The 90s
3. Black Hole Sun - Soundgarden (1994)
Black Hole Sun was a track that Chris Cornell was hesitant to share with the rest of his band. He felt it might be a little too slow compared to Soundgarden's usual brand of grunge. Oh was he wrong. It became one of the bands biggest tracks to date.
For a grunge band from Seattle the song had a distinctive hint of Californian psychedelia about it. There was plenty of chorus and reverb swirling around in the guitar tone and coupled with the laid back tempo the track lent itself to Beatles comparisons.
To match the off kilter sound of the track the band required an equally surreal music video. They recruited veteran director Howard Greenhalgh, who knew exactly what to do. The video certainly captured the unnerving nature of the songs lyrics, exploring the darker sides of psychedelia. The video feels like you are bearing witness to a nightmarish trip experienced by Hunter S. Thompson.
There's all these over exaggerated and terrifying depictions of the suburban lifestyle, set to the back drop of an apocalyptic weather phenomena. Cornells lyrics, although brilliant, are somewhat ambiguous and hard to fathom and the video is equally confusing.
But that didn't matter. It was a wonderfully bizarre cocktail of confusing entertainment.
