10 Best Hard Rock Songs Of The '70s

3. Kashmir - Led Zeppelin (1975)

Zeppelin were the band that dominated the realm of hard rock during the 1970s. No other voice could rival the powerfully shrill screams of Robert Plant, and there were few guitarists that could consistently churn out instantly memorable riffs like Jimmy Page.

Kashmir has to be one of the most timeless sounding songs from that era. The ominous march of the guitar, coupled with Plant's evocative lyricism, gives the impression that the band are welcoming in the apocalypse.

There was all kinds of far reaching influences in this number. The lyrics were inspired by a journey Robert Plant took through the deserts of Morocco, but he also referenced a region of northern India, as made evident by the title. The swirling Middle Eastern string sections added a whole other layer of imagery. You could listen to this track on repeat for hours, and each time you'd come out of the experience with a slightly different take on it.

There's a real cinematic feel to this track. It could fit effortlessly as the score for some 1960's Hollywood adventure film, and equally well in a movie about the machine take over of the human race.
