10 Best Image Changes In Music History
6. Peter Gabriel Swapped Extravagance For Social Awareness
Peter Gabriel is one of the music world's most famous names, having amassed three BRIT Awards, six Grammys and a place in the Rock n Roll Hall of Fame. Whether it be during his time launching his career as the lead singer of Genesis or through his solo work after leaving the group, Gabriel's image has changed countless times to help him remain on top and with the times.
Gabriel grew up in a strong middle class household and helped form Genesis in 1967 along with Tony Banks, Anthony Phillips, Chris Stewart and Mike Rutherford. Five pupils from Charterhouse School, the initial schoolboy look the group cultivated was on the way out of the music scene and they only really began to taste commercial success once Gabriel began promoting their live shows with increasingly lavish outfits.
Once his time with the band drew to a close, Gabriel once again made an image shift that would prove instrumental in keeping his success rolling. The extravagant stage personas were slowly ditched and more restrained, simple outfits were used to fit in with the socially-conscious, delicate works the singer began to cultivate.
