10 Best Image Changes In Music History
2. The Beatles' Awakening Turned Them Way Shaggier
One of the most culturally important image shifts in the history of music, The Beatles' change in appearance and in sound throughout the 1960s were deeply rooted in the widespread changes occurring within society at the time.
Ever since their formation in 1960, John, Paul, Ringo and George had cultivated a very specific look. The suits they wore made them look like smart and decent young men, and their iconic haircuts spawned the infamous Beatlemania craze of the mid '60s. The Beatles' invasion of America in 1964 was the last hurrah of this image however, and the group soon begun experimenting with more innovative sounds and more experimental looks.
The respectable Beatle haircuts were replaced by long barnets, beards and moustaches and the clean suits were swapped out for colour-coordinated uniforms most notably seen on the cover for Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Club Hearts Band.
An awakening for the band and represented in the increasingly psychedelic sound in their music, their new looks represented a rejection of society's norms and expectations for a rock group. With their individuality let loose, there's plenty to suggest the late '60s saw the very best of The Beatles.
