10 Best Indie/Alternative Songs Of 2017 (So Far)
7. My Name Is Ruin - Gary Numan
Having first topped the UK Singles Charts in 1979 with his genre-defining Are Friends Electric?, it is quite astonishing that electronic pioneer Gary Numan is still making music at all. The fact it's this good is almost beyond belief.
Numan is back with the Middle Eastern infused My Name Is Ruin, the lead single from his upcoming twenty-first studio album Savage (Songs From A Broken World). The full version of the track is a brooding, six minute epic that combines those Middle Eastern vibes with a dark synth and bass undercurrent, all of which build to one of the most monstrous choruses of the year.
On discussing the conceptual origin of the album, Numan stated:
"The songs are about the things that people do in such a harsh and terrifying environment... It's about a desperate need to survive and they do awful things in order to do so, and some are haunted by what they've done. That desire to be forgiven, along with some discovered remnants of an old religious book, ultimately encourages religion to resurface, and it really goes downhill from there."
