10 Best Indie/Alternative Songs Of 2017 (So Far)
4. Emperor - Mark Lanegan
Whether he's fronting the Screaming Trees, guesting and collaborating with a wide spectrum of artists, or going solo, Mark Lanegan has become something of an ever present luminary in the alternative rock scene since first emerging in the mid-eighties.
His most recent release, Gargoyle, marks something of a renaissance for the world-weary blues rocker. Featuring backing vocals from Queens of the Stone Age front man Josh Homme, Emperor is the standout track from the album.
Unlike much of the album's content, which wouldn't be out of place closing an episode of the current season of Twin Peaks, Emperor is driven along at a brisk pace by an uptempo and hooky melody.
Lanegan and Homme's chorus harmonies evoke nostalgic memories of the former's time in Queens of the Stone Age, having participated in their landmark 2002 release, Songs For The Deaf, as well as guesting on numerous other Queens releases.
