6. Breed - Nirvana (1991)

Kurt Cobain had two approaches to playing his songs live. If the band was making a TV or award show appearance Cobain often did his upmost to make a mockery of the whole thing. If there was even the faintest scent of corporate censorship, he would find a way to rebel.

Famously defying the request of show producers, he played part of Rape Me at the MTV Music award ceremony, before transitioning into Lithium. And, on Top of the Pops, Cobain refused to mime along to the backing track of Smells Like Teen Spirit, instead singing in an unusual voice and replacing the opening words with "Load up on drugs, kill your friends". It all made for good entertainment.

But if you caught one of their actual shows you were likely to witness a thrilling and alarming spectacle of explosive grunge music played with more conviction than anyone else in the game.
