10 Best Manchester Albums Of The 2010s

4. Call The Comet - Johnny Marr (2018)

Following Morrissey’s outspoken political views looming over his musical releases, Johnny Marr proved that we don’t need his former bandmate anymore with his third studio album Call the Comet.

You’d be mistaken for thinking from the single Hi Hello that Call the Comet just The Smiths with a sunnier outlook. It is not. My Eternal is a chilling nod to Manchester synthpop era, while New Dominions could be a lost Joy Division track.

Adventurous and futuristic, while harking back to his heroes T-Rex and Bowie. Marr’s work with legendary composer Hans Zimmer on The Amazing Spiderman and Inception soundtracks shows here, particularly on Walk Into the Sea. The track is an atmospheric six minute epic, with a greater metaphor breaking the taboo of male mental health.

Call the Comet is Marr’s most ambitious, most complete, and most grandiose album. Call The Comet is his third solo album since 2013, so we're likely due a follow-up very soon.

Marr recently posted on his Instagram a meeting with Kendrick Lamar, so our fingers are crossed for a future collaboration. Fancy it?
