10 Best Metal Albums Of The 1990s - Ranked

6. Cannibal Corpse – Tomb Of The Mutilated

The essential death metal album of the 1990s, Tomb Of The Mutilated is the magnum opus of Cannibal Corpse, with it’s hyper-technical instrumentals, earthshaking growling vocals, and macabre lyrical theme.

This release is like a horror movie and a metal album rolled into one, with many of the songs taking influence from real life killers, murders, and scenarios.

Brought to life in twisted fashion by the brutal tones of then vocalist, Chris Barnes, Tomb Of The Mutilated is constructed with evil intentions, to shock, disgust, and generate controversy, the most effective basis of any true death metal album.

Alex Webster is the true MVP here, as his bass work is a triumph with fast paced, heavy, and technical sections, despite the ultra-low tuning the band are accustom to.

The standout song on the album is opener Hammer Smashed Face, the band’s most popular song. But make no mistake; the rest of the explicitly shocking track listing is not to be taken lightly.
