9. Evil Empire- Rage Against the Machine

Rage Against the Machine were in a unique position midway through the decade. Their explosive debut had set the world on fire with its bold sonic experimentation and inventive blending of hip hop and metal. Was this new sound going to be a fluke or could they overcome the sophomore slump skeptics?

From the moment "People of the Sun" blared out, the band shocked the metal scene by becoming even angrier than their debut. As the band built tracks like "Bulls on Parade," the riffs sound more gargantuan, as if they are providing the backing for a mechanical monster coming to reek havoc on the world.

The lyrics of Zack de la Rocha also doubled down on the political themes, from his condemnation of right-wing radio on "Vietnow" to the direct assault on Calfornia racism in "Down Rodeo." Detailed on the inside sleeve were also a list of different books on philosophy and politics that were meant to show the band's fanbase the importance behind their lyrical approach.

Even though the band's debut took the world by storm, Evil Empire dared to aim even bigger than just the hard rock scene. Pushing themselves to more intense musical heights, Rage Against the Machine were determined to make their message more than just music, and succeeded with flying colors.
