10 Best Metallica Songs

9. Sad But True - The Black Album (1991)

The Black Album was a departure from the band's thrash metal roots. With such a change came a slower tempo and a greater mainstream appeal.

Though ‘Enter Sandman’ is Metallica's most recognisable song, ‘Sad but True’ is the more powerful of the two opening tracks on the album.

The main riff is simple yet heavy, and anyone who has ever experienced this song live knows how much the crowd move when it kicks in.

Hetfield also delivers one of his catchiest vocal melodies on this track, with both the verses and the chorus merging beautifully to form one cohesive hook.

‘Sad but True’ may seem a little slow for those who favour Metallica’s earlier sound, but there’s no denying that this track is a perfect exemplification of why the band were right to experiment with their sound.
