6. Thoughts Of A Dying Atheist- Absolution (2003)
Muse’s 3rd album is one of the band’s more commercially successful albums and for good reason. These songs have a space-age grandeur to them and a gnarly punch for the rock fans. Not so when it comes to this song though.
The closest thing to a pop tune, the song’s subject matter about an atheist afraid of the afterlife may be the only thing that prevented it from being a single. This song is almost a callback to glam rock with the guitars upfront and the “yeah yeah” hook of the chorus which slams back to the main verse arpeggios.
It’s basically what would happen if you put Marc Bolan in a room with Queen and had someone like Nick Cave write the lyrics.
