10 Best Music Videos Of 2013

8. Q.U.E.E.N - Janelle Monae

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tEddixS-UoU Edgy and artsy, the video for "Q.U.E.E.N" speaks out for freedom of expression in music, art, fashion, and oneself. The video starts in the "Living Museum" where we see the members of Wonderland frozen. They are considered legendary rebels of our time and Janelle Monae is the notorious leader of the pack who launched project Q.U.E.E.N, a musical weapons project. When two girls sneak in and start the record the bands comes to life, and tells us what project Q.U.E.E.N is all about. The video sticks to a black and white color scheme, with only a few hints of color on Monae's outfits and a few other costumes. This could represent how black and white society can be with what's considered appropriate and normal. The splashes of red in the costumes could symbolise how Monae is speaking out against this judgement, as there's nothing wrong with getting down and being different. The black and white could also symbolise how everyone of us, no matter how different we look or how different our beliefs are, we are all the same on the inside, deserving the same respects. Nobody should be put down for who they are, and Q.U.E.E.N definitely makes this clear as everyone in the video is dancing, having a good time, and not caring about what the rest of the world thinks. The best part of this video is when Monae gets fancy and simple in her tux, and makes you pay attention to her and the point she's trying to get across in a rap that could contend with the best in the business.

Art is expression, with any possible form of media you can think of. Throughout my life I have experimented with many creative outlets such as music, writing, painting, drawing, sculpting, photography, and film. Recently I have grown to love the art of film. It is a great way to get my creativity working in fantastic ways. I am now working on getting a degree in Communications with a minor in Creative Writing. I will be graduating from the University of Detroit Mercy in 2014 and hope to pursue a masters in film down the road. I have currently started working as a video/audio assistant and technician at my University. I also freelance write, produce and edit stories, poetry, and video. I hope that someday I can produce my own films and work on documentaries focusing on nature and destinations. Life is too short to stop and think. Act, see, and experience the world and it's beauties. There's no better way to do that than seeing it first hand, then reminding yourself later of what awesome things you've seen, by looking through your camera or expressing it in a story.
