1. Peter Gabriel - Sledgehammer

If there's any video that could rival Thriller outside of Michael Jackson's own catalogue, then it's this mini-masterpiece of creative invention that accompanied the former Genesis frontman's biggest solo hit to date, helping to send its album So to arguably greater heights than anything else in the singer's career.

The clip furthered the work of director Stephen R. Johnson from his previous efforts on Talking Heads' Road to Nowhere, and featured a variety of animations circling around Gabriel. Much of the clip was shot in stop-motion, with the singer forced to lay under a sheet of glass for sixteen hours - while its famed "headless chicken" segment represented one of the earliest works of Aardman Animations man Nick Park, who would go on to create Wallace & Gromit.
