10 Best Music Videos Of The 1980s

5. Dire Straits - Money For Nothing

The pub-blues-turned-art-prog outfit led by Mark Knopfler had never particularly chased the limelight when it came to the advent of MTV, yet they unwittingly found themselves atop its summit when they debuted the clip for their ZZ-top indebted hard-rocker from fifth album Brothers in Arms, a song that even featured a potshot refrain at the network sung by Police frontman Sting.

Featuring then-groundbreaking computer animation - making the video one of the very first to feature the artform - it helped propel both song and album to the upper echelons of the charts, in the process turning the group into one of the biggest arena acts of the era. Knopfler cooled on its success before long, though the song has found its way back into his solo show in recent years.

Something of a culture vulture, Mr Steel can historically be found in three places; the local cinema, the local stadium or the local chip shop. He is an avowed fan of franchise films, amateur cricket and power-chords.
