10 Best New Heavy Metal Bands Of 2018

3. Møl

Thanks to new albums from Deafheaven, Sylvaine, Bosse-de-Nage and more, blackgaze has been a hot topic once again this year. And while these names’ new releases have all been fantastic (especially Sylvaine’s Atoms Aligned, Coming Undone!), none of them have been able to hold a candle to Møl’s first album, Jord.

Released on 13th April through the excelsior Holy Roar Records, Jord is destined to be hailed in the near-future as a pillar of the blackgaze subgenre. Unlike Deafheaven or Alcest – who make their tracks lengthy and meandering – Møl’s take on the style is far more concise. If other blackgaze songs are long-winded novels, Møl’s are but brief poems: just as artistic, yet far punchier. The proof can be found in the guttural riffs of “Vakuum” or the fast-shifting dynamics of “Storm”, which unite beauty and brutality in perfect harmony.

Naturally, Jord was quickly barraged with critical acclaim. As a result, Møl were quickly able to make it to the UK as support for post-blackened stalwarts Ghost Bath, where the Danes’ live show was just as lauded. Many an onlooker fell in love with their “weightlessness” and prowess – as well as their flooring lighting.

It would be easy to write “Møl are the next Deafheaven”, but the truth is they’re probably far better.
